Around my house the Harry Potter movies are what we like to call, well, awesome. I’m not talking the books are better than the movies–none of us have read any of the books, we are more “movie people.”

Now if you were to mix Smallmouth and Harry Potter together there would be a warp in the space/time continuum and that lake around Hogwarts would probably surrounded by eager fly fisherman….where am I going with this? Anyway, for the September fly of the month we have a seriously great smallmouth fly with oneo f the most innovative tying/fishing techniques I have seen on new flies for this year. You see, this fly has a rubber gasket holding on the hourglass eye…allowing you to switch out size, color, or no lead eyes–seriously. I have fished this fly over the summer and will personally vouch for it working well in med/fast water (personally I put on heavier eyes than it comes with but no biggie) Rabbit strips and Sili-Legs, need I say more?

A while back I contacted Idylwilde about making a video on smallmouth fishing with some of their cool new Bass flies. They were game so I got some flies and ran straight to the river….and proceeded to lose that whole box of flies (that story can be found here)

Either way, smallmouth fishing has been GREAT this summer and the fam and I have been hitting them hard….real hard. As I have said before, if those dang trout didn’t get SO BIG you couldn’t peel me away from smallmouth water.

So here is probably a video that will be two-fold, part sneak peek at the “Summer 2010 Re-cap” video, part awesome Idylwilde Flies promo….either way I thought it was fun.
Click here to view the embedded video.

I recently had the chance to fish a PILE of Idylwilde bass flies….you see, it is Smallmouth time in Southern Missouri and it is pretty hard for me to peel away from those scrappy fish to guide trout–but you do what you have to do. These Idylwilde flies are super cool, just look ‘fishy’, and they CATCH FISH.

To be honest I was more excited about some of the cool top-water flies like the Warm Water Whammy and a baitfish imitation called the BellyDancer….but I had this super heavy, very driftable fly called “Hogan’s Bass Cracker” in the mix as well. First cast with a Bass Cracker — Fish On! This thing is not for the faint of heart as it has one purpose, to get deep, QUICK but it is insanely effective. It drifts very, very well on a tight line through your favorite smallmouth runs and bottom bounces in the slow deep pools just as well. Give it a shot!

After a year long hiatus (we hear he left to hike the AT and was side-tracked by a hippie girl along the way) the Fly of the Month is back….with a vengeance.

Officially summer starts this month…..and, to me, that means 2 things–Smallmouth and Night Fishing (along with cold beer so make that 3 things.) I have a huge passion for smallmouth and to be honest, if trout didn’t get to be so BIG I would hardly fish for them compared to smallmouth. I was never much of a lake fisherman but all fisherman have heard of the deadly “Jig and Pig” combo…and that is exactly what the June fly of the month represents–in fly form.

The June, 2010 fly of the month…..The Grim Reaper

When I fish for smallmouth I am throwing one of 2 things 90% of the time, a topwater popper of some kind or a craw-type imitation. The Grim Reaper has everything I look for in a bottom-crawling-creature…..flared rubber skirt, plump body, heavy head.

Fish on!

Recently I had the opportunity to speak to the Trout Unlimited group out of Branson. As we wrapped up the program I was talking to a guy by the name of Rick Coffman. I had heard some of his podcasts in the past and they were crazy entertaining so naturally when he asked if I would be interested I jumped on it! To make a long story short we recorded the podcast and did an “on-stream” interview and it went really well.

To listen to the podcast click the link below or the Liv2 Fly Fish Logo to the left. While there check out some of his other podcasts and photos.
